They were originally collected by Frederic Hockliffe (), a Bedford publisher and bookseller. The Hockliffe Collection contains in excess of a thousand children's books which date from between and the early twentieth century. Most of the books in the collection were published between anda period which is generally considered to encompass the birth, infancy and growth to maturity of children's literature in English.
